Ok new to upgrading phone little help

Ok so basiclly i'm a noob when it comes to phones and all the upgrading and stuff like that I can download songs and add them to my phone Whoo Hoo

anyway,lol what's the deal with all the firmware stuff I see spiderman and all that one here and new firmware does it add new stuff to your phone if so like what I'd like to learn all i can out o this phone any help would be great
